Exposure and Response Therapy is currently the most effective treatment for OCD and many other anxiety disorders. This treatment modality allows the person to begin to face their fears in a gradual and methodical way. Running from and avoiding fears through compulsions and rituals only feeds the problem and strengthens the anxiety. As clients expose themselves to their fears repeatedly, they begin to habituate (get used to) their fears and they lose their effect, are less powerful and become manageable. When using ERP as a treatment for OCD and anxiety, the client will find they will get better by feeling their way through their fears instead of thinking themselves out of them. In the end, after successful treatment, clients whose everyday lives have been affected by OCD and anxiety are able to get their brain wrapped around what is truth.
