ACT Definition

Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapy process that is used to in the treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders. ACT uses mindfulness and acceptance strategies to change behavior. The idea is to create flexibility by not reacting to fearful feelings. It also helps individuals to not act upon or avoid their fears, but to see them for what they really are and see the truth behind them.


Exposure and Response Therapy is currently the most effective treatment for OCD and many other anxiety disorders. This treatment modality allows the person to begin to face their fears in a gradual and methodical way. Running from and avoiding fears through compulsions and rituals only feeds the problem and strengthens the anxiety. As clients expose themselves to their fears repeatedly, they begin to habituate (get used to) their fears and they lose their effect, are less powerful and become manageable. When using ERP as a treatment for OCD and anxiety, the client will find they will get better by feeling their way through their fears instead of thinking themselves out of them. In the end, after successful treatment, clients whose everyday lives have been affected by OCD and anxiety are able to get their brain wrapped around what is truth.

Types of Relaxation

Anxiety is a physical and mental issue. When suffering with anxiety, most people expect they should be able to carry on with daily life as though they had no anxiety. However, by the end of the day, where are they emotionally? Imagine a pressure cooker that gets more and more pressure, it eventually blows! In order for a client to develop control over their feelings of anxiety, the practicing of daily relaxation techniques is critical to a successful outcome. There are dozens of types of relaxation exercises that can be used to help purge feelings of anxiety and make the fight more bearable.

Mindfulness Definition

Mindfulness is an affective practice in coping with the symptoms of OCD and anxiety disorders. It teaches a person how to focus and become much more aware of what is happening in the present moment, while at the same time tapping into their senses to ground them so they are able to acknowledge these feelings. This process has been proven scientifically to help reduce the hold and relieve the symptoms of OCD and other anxiety disorders.
